INTEGRATED STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING AND ENERGY HARVESTING FROM THIN PIEZO SENSOR PATCH

Supervisor: Dr. Suresh Bhalla, Associate Professor, IIT Delhi
 Tenure: July 2011- May 2015

 Major Contributions:

  • Investigating feasibility of d31 mode for energy harvesting, circumventing built up configurations and secondary structures

  • Feasibility of using the same PZT patch for integrated SHM and energy harvesting

  • Development of analytical power estimation model for adhesively bonded PZT patches in surface-bonded / embedded configurations

  • Detailed numerical investigations for parametric study and parameter optimization

  • Demonstration of feasibility of combined energy harvesting and SHM on real-life steel/ RC bridges

  • Invention disclosure “A novel energy harvesting solution for reinforced concrete structures”, culminating in filing of patent at Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), IIT Delhi, submitted on 30th October, 2014.

M. Tech. Project

OPTIMUM DAMPING AND PLACEMENT OF FRICTION DAMPERS IN HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS

Supervisor: Prof. A. K. Nagpal and Dr. Vasant Matsagar, IIT Delhi.
Tenure: August 2010 to May 2011

 Major Contributions:

  • Investigation of earthquake response of the medium-rise to high-rise buildings for three basic types of shear-type structures modelled in SAP2000 software: Moment Resisting Frame (MRF), Braced Frame (BF) and Friction Damped Frame (FDF).

  • Performing time history analyses of structures of varying heights.

  • Modelling of the friction dampers of the two distinct phases namely, the stick phase and the slip phase. Energy plots were also investigated.

  • Development of a FORTRAN program using Newmark’s Beta numerical integration method and optimization for the damping parameter.

Additional Research work carried out during M. Tech. Program: Tuned Mass Damper on Base-Isolated Building  under Near-  Fault Earthquakes

Supervisor: Dr. Vasant Matsagar, IIT Delhi

Tenure: August 2010 to May 2011

 Major Contributions:

  • Investigation of the effectiveness of a tuned mass damper applied at the top floor level of a base-isolated building in a near field earthquake scenario.

  • Modelling of the buildings with varying heights (five to twenty five storeys) as shear-type structures using SAP2000 software, considering four cases: conventional fixed-base building (FB), base-isolated building (BI), building installed only with a tuned mass damper (TMD) and base-isolated building installed with a tuned mass damper (BI+TMD).

  • Time history analyses of the above structures were also carried out.

B. Tech. Project

Supervisor: Dr. P.P. Bansal (Lecturer, Thapar University, Patiala)

Mr. S.R. Sahney (Sr. Consultant, EDC, New Delhi)

Tenure: June, 2006 to December, 2006

 Major Contributions:

  • Analysis and design of 80 m long tunnel for the Wagon Tippler Complex in Vishakapatnam, for Duro Felguera Plant Industries, South Africa.

  • Static and Dynamic Analysis of Turbine House of J.K. Paper Mill, Songarh, Surat.

  • Analysis of 100 Mega Ton RCC silo using STAAD.Pro - 2005.

  • Design of Gantry Girders.

Survey Camp in June 2003, Dalhousie (H.P.), India. Jobs undertaken include Tachometric surveying, Fly levelling and contouring.
